Design Thinking for Humanity

What is it?

Design Thinking for Humanity fundamentally expands the classic approach. It moves away from a sole focus on the individual end user toward a holistic, life-centered perspective. Methodologically, this framework unites five core disciplines into a new operating system for complex challenges: futures thinking, design thinking, ecological thinking, systems thinking, and the responsible use of exponential technologies. The goal is to create radical, viable innovations that respect planetary boundaries and secure collective resilience for generations to come.

How does it work?

The method breaks down existing silos through transdisciplinary collaboration. The innovation process moves through five strategic phases: it begins with immersion in the future and empathy, moves through problem definition in a systemic context to future-oriented ideation, and finally culminates in future-ready prototyping and strategic navigation. Tools such as Wicked Problem Framing or Future-Ready Roadmapping help teams work backward from a long-term vision to concrete, immediate actions in the here and now.

Why does it matter?

In an era of rapid disruption, linear problem-solving and purely profit-driven metrics fall short. One-sided optimization makes our global systems fragile and blinds us to the long-term consequences for the environment and society. This approach is a moral imperative: to move from merely minimizing harm to genuine, measurable regeneration. Only when we design systems that learn and evolve through disruption and unforeseeable crises can we secure lasting wellbeing for all.

Founder of DTP

Michael Lewrick

"We have to constantly reflect on and develop our attitude towards growth and new business models. New technologies and digitization offer new opportunities to develop ideas and shape customer experiences."

Patrick Link

"More important than the process or the method is the mindset and the adaptation to the respective context. Since all agile approaches basically have the same mindset, you can learn a lot from the other approaches."

Larry Leifer

"Steve Jobs put it in a nutshell:" Think different! " The correct answer would be: "Think differently!" With this he expressed the essence of design thinking with pinpoint accuracy: not necessarily doing what is expected. "
